Since you do not mention the type of disc you are using I assume it is floppy since most commonly A drive represents the floppy. If this is correct it is not unusual for floppy disc to go bad. If you're tried formatting a variety of disks, it could be that the floppy disk drive is faulty, or that a connection is bad. Ensure that the cable connectors are snug on both ends; if that doesn't help, you would perhaps wish to try an alternate floppy drive, or perhaps go with a USB floppy disk drive.
